The 8 days we spent with Miguel will remain in our hearts always. Our time with him will always be treasured, and since there were only the 3 of us on our ‘private’ hiker’s journey it was a very personal experience. Miguel's breadth of knowledge and love for his country and people brought depth to our trip that we never imagined would happen. He was welcomed by friends and acquaintances everywhere we traveled and treated every interaction with his countrymen as a blessing. At times it was like traveling with a Buddha, gracefully experiencing his life, in the moment, with humility and gratitude. He inspired us and brings out the best in everyone he meets. Miguel should be named a national treasure of Peru. There are not enough wonderful words to describe this man. I have been given such a gift in getting to experience Peru through Miguel's eyes. I have come to love this country and its people. It was not just the experience of hiking the Inka trail, but Miguel made the trail come to life. I felt as if I was walking the trail in the 15th century with the Inka people and then again with Hiram Bingham in 1915. Every step we took as a group was instilled with Miguel's passion and love for his country. He built us up and made us strong so that we became proud of our abitilies which conincided with the awe and strength of the Inka culture itself. It was if we were becoming as one with this ancient, beautiful culture. Miguel was not only teacher, philosopher, mentor, and mother hen to a brood of 14 Americans on this trip, but he also became brother, son, father, and most improtantly friend to all of us.
