Arrive
Cartagena was founded in 1533 and served a key role in political and economic activity for the crown of Spain. The city became a major trading port, especially for gold and silver that was loaded onto galleons bound for Spain. Today, you’ll be introduced to this city through your taste buds on a street food tour. Enjoy traditional dishes like arepas, empanadas, and Colombian-style lemonade. Visit the San Diego Square, known for its delicious food, and taste a variety of local flavors, like sweets made of exotic fruits and panela (unrefined brown sugar), and traditional dishes inspired by the cultural diversity of Cartagena. Overnight at Anandá Hotel Boutique.

Day 2
Cartagena
This morning begins with a short boat ride to explore the imposing San Fernando Fortress on Tierra Bomba Island, designed to control the Bocachica channel and access to the harbor of Cartagena. You’ll then return to the city to see the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas, built by the Spanish in 1536. Constantly attacked by English and French pirates, the castle has been rebuilt several times. In 1586, Sir Francis Drake’s fleet destroyed a quarter of the city, and Spain poured millions into fortifying the port with walls. You’ll walk the walls of the city, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, and then enjoy the remainder of the day for independent exploration in the market, where Palenque women sell goods from baskets balanced on their heads. With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.
