Pench National Park Extension

Tigers and Leopards of the Teak Forest

Overview

If Kanha is known for its tigers, Pench will complete the experience with more tiger sightings plus leopards and Indian wild dogs, which are not prevalent in Kanha, and we'll have exclusive access to the remote north gate of the park (Kanha is quite famous and therefore a bit more crowded). Our special access gives us a more unique experience and gets us closer to the wildlife. Our award-winning accommodation, Jamtara, named on Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List, is an experience in itself. Pench National Park (named for the river that flows through it) encompasses almost 300 square miles, with over 1,200 species of plants recorded, including rare species. Pench’s teak forests have always been rich in wildlife, with a large population of chital and sambar deer and a diversity of other animals including leopard, tiger, jungle cat, dhole (Indian wild dog), sloth bear, wild boar, mongoose, and gaur (Indian bison). The villages around Pench are completely remote and unvisited, adding a feeling of authentic culture to the wildlife experiences.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Kanha / Pench National Park

A half-day drive brings you from Kanha to Pench National Park, where you’ll check in at Jamtara Wilderness Camp. Set at the remote north gate to Pench National Park, Jamtara has 10 exquisite safari-style tents with king or twin beds and a private bathroom. Each tented room overlooks the forest, offering a scenic background for the wildlife experiences, and there is an infinity pool at camp for a refreshing dip. Jamtara believes profoundly in supporting the local community, and another unique option here is a night in a private machan—a “sky bed” on a raised platform complete with a four-poster bed enclosed in mosquito netting! It’s a great way to stargaze and truly experience the Indian night. These charming machans are built on the land of local farmers and are a way for the local people to benefit directly from nature tourism. Overnight at Jamtara Wilderness Camp.
