Petra and the Dead Sea Extension for Crossroads of Empires Cruise

Wadi Rum to Amman, Jordan

Overview

From the majestic desert valley of Wadi Rum, this extension brings you to the fabled ruins of Petra where spectacular rock-cut tombs, temples, and a theater were carved from sandstone in the 3rd century BC. Make a pilgrimage to Mount Nebo, the biblical site where Moses saw the Promised Land, and tour Madaba, the “City of Mosaics.” After enjoying rejuvenating floats in the Dead Sea’s mineral rich waters, your extension concludes in Jordan’s buzzing cosmopolitan capital of Amman, pulsing with mosques, souks, galleries, and coffeehouses.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Aqaba, Jordan / Disembark / Wadi Rum / Petra

Disembark this morning and board 4x4 vehicles for a ride through Wadi Rum, the majestic valley made famous by T. E. Lawrence and featured in the epic movie Lawrence of Arabia. Enjoy tea with a Bedouin family before having lunch surrounded by dramatic sandstone formations that tower over the desert floor strewn with immense boulders. Continue to Petra and check in to the Petra Marriott Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2
Petra

Rise early this morning for a full day at the superb ruins of Petra, capital of the Nabataean civilization. In a dramatic approach, enter the Siq, a narrow chasm between 600-foot-high rock walls, which opens into the ancient city. The spectacular rock-cut tombs, temples, and a theater are carved from vividly hued, iron-rich sandstone, which earns it the nickname “Rose-Red Petra.” The façade of the treasury, remarkably well preserved, bears testimony to Petra’s prominence as a wealthy center monopolizing the lucrative trading routes north of the Red Sea.

Day 3
Petra / Dead Sea

Make a pilgrimage to Mount Nebo, the alleged site where Moses saw the Promised Land. Tour Madaba, the “City of Mosaics,” famed for its 6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land made from two million vibrant pieces of stone. Enjoy lunch with spectacular views of the Wadi Araba in Dana Village, set at the edge of a natural gorge, then continue to the Dead Sea Marriott Resort for a relaxing afternoon of optional spa treatments and rejuvenating floats in the Dead Sea’s mineral-rich waters.

Day 4
Dead Sea / Amman

After a last morning soak, depart overland for Amman. Jordan’s cosmopolitan capital buzzes around numerous ancient ruins that lie within the city limits. Tour the Temple of Hercules at the historic citadel atop Jabal al-Qala’a Hill and the 2nd century Roman amphitheater nearby. Roam around more Greco-Roman ruins at Jerash, one of the Middle East’s best-preserved sites, before visiting the Crusader-era Ajloun Castle. Check in to the Intercontinental Amman for dinner and overnight.
