Wild Ireland

From Dublin to Belfast aboard the Greg Mortimer

This voyage may be combined with Wild Scotland

Overview

Cathedrals and cliffs, crystal blue waters and clusters of seabirds, windswept trails and geological wonders—Ireland is a mystical land! From Dublin to Belfast, embark on a seafaring adventure around Ireland. Visit historic sites like the 15th century Ballinskelligs, the 5th century Dún Aengus stone fort, and the heritage village at Glencolmcille with cottages dating back to the 18th century. Accompanied by the ship’s excellent team of biologists, ornithologists, naturalists, and historians, you’ll explore the Cliffs of Moher, the Aran Islands, the Giant’s Causeway, and scenic Clew Bay, all the while keeping an eye out for a variety of seabirds and wildlife. Your home base, the Greg Mortimer, is one of the most advanced expedition ships in the world. Relax in the lounge with 180-degree views or grab your binoculars and head out to one of the many outdoor observation decks on this incredible tour of coastal Ireland.

Note: This cruise is not exclusive to, nor operated by, Wilderness Travel, who acts solely as agent in booking your reservation with the ship operator. The itinerary, lecturers, and all other arrangements are subject to change at the discretion of the cruise line.

Itinerary

Day 1, May 29, 2021
Depart

Board your independent overnight flight to Dublin.

Day 2, May 30, 2021
Dublin, Ireland

Arrive in Dublin and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore the city on your own. Gather at the hotel this evening for a Welcome Dinner with your crew and fellow travelers.

Day 3, May 31, 2021
Dublin / Waterford / Cork / Embarkation

Take a drive through the scenic countryside to Waterford for a visit to the renowned House of Waterford Crystal where you have the opportunity to watch master craftsmen at work. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Cork and embark the Greg Mortimer.

Day 4, Jun 1, 2021
Ballinskelligs, Ireland

The Ballinskelligs Priory was founded in the 12th century by monks who moved to the mainland from Skellig Michael after numerous Viking attacks. A number of buildings still remain, including a church, tower house, parts of the cloister, a large domestic hall, and cemetery, most of which dates from the 15th century. On a clear day, views across the bay are simply spectacular.

Day 5, Jun 2, 2021
Cliffs of Moher

The dramatic Cliffs of Moher soar to over 700 feet above the crashing Atlantic and offer some of Ireland’s most stunning scenery. These rugged cliffs are part of a UNESCO Global Geopark and serve as an important nesting site for over 20 species of seabirds, including guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and Atlantic puffins. Step ashore for walks through this magical landscape, where wildflower-studded meadows give way to wind-whipped clifftops with amazing views of the surf-pounded coast.

Day 6, Jun 3, 2021
Inishmore, Aran Islands / Killary Fjord

This morning, arrive at Inishmore, the largest of the three Aran Islands, and an outpost of Gaelic culture where Irish-speaking residents live in traditional stone cottages. Tour the 5th-century Dún Aengus Fort, a prehistoric stone fort dramatically situated at the edge of 300-foot cliffs, the Heritage Museum, and several monastic sites. Permission pending, cruise through Killary Fjord, which extends 10 miles from the Atlantic to the quaint village of Leenane. Keep an eye out for resident bird species such as ringed plovers, mute and whooper swans, tufted ducks, and barnacle geese.

Day 7, Jun 4, 2021
Clew Bay, County Mayo

Set out to explore scenic Clew Bay, dotted with 365 low-lying islands—limestone drumlins formed during the last Ice Age. Join naturalists for a walk in Ballycory National Park, which boasts one of the largest Atlantic blanket bog systems in Europe, keeping an eye out for Greenland white-fronted geese, peregrine falcons, and corncrakes. This evening, cruise among the windswept islands along the jagged Connemara Coast, an area once described as “a place of savage beauty” by Oscar Wilde.

Day 8, Jun 5, 2021
County Donegal

Enjoy a visit to Malin Head today, the most northerly point of the island of Ireland. Here you will find a variety of waterfowl as well as a watchtower built during the Napoleonic Wars and a signal station built in 1902. Continue to Glencolmcille to view a thatched-roof replica of a rural Irish village with cottages from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, a reconstructed school house, and a tiny pub.

Day 9, Jun 6, 2021
Portrush, Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland / Disembark / Belfast

Disembark in Portrush and travel overland to the World Heritage Site of Giant’s Causeway. This three-mile section of coastline is a geological masterpiece—some 40,000 closely-packed hexagonal columns of varying heights line the coast and descend like a staircase into the sea. After lunch, continue to Belfast and check in to the Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast for dinner and overnight.

Day 10, Jun 7, 2021
Depart

Board your independent flight home.

What the Trip is Like

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Greg Mortimer

One of the most advanced expedition ships in the world, the 126-passenger Greg Mortimer (named after the well-known Australian mountaineer and explorer) was built to world-class polar standards with the most up-to-date safety and nautical technology. Her unique, inverted bow allows for more gentle sea crossings, improved comfort, and reduced emissions. The ship has an impressive list of environmentally friendly features—her Tier 3 engine gives off 80% less emissions than Tier 1 engines, she has a high fuel efficiency, reduced light pollution, lower plastic use, and state-of-the-art anchoring technology that allows the ship to hold its position without disturbing the sea floor. All cabins have private bathrooms, ample storage, ocean-view windows, individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, and most have private balconies. There are also interconnecting stateroom options for families and groups. Onboard observation points are a key feature for optimal wildlife viewing. These include a 180-degree indoor lounge, a 360-degree outdoor open viewing deck, a sun deck, and two hydraulic viewing platforms on Deck 5. Meals are served in the dining room that can accommodate all guests at one seating, and coffee, tea, and snacks are available around the clock. Guests can enjoy presentations in the lecture room, two bar/lounges with floor-to-ceiling windows, a library, and wellness center with fitness equipment, sauna, and spa. The ship carries a fleet of 15 Zodiacs, kayaks, and diving and climbing equipment.
