Join your private guide for fascinating explorations in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Your choice of tours include the Cape Peninsula, a township, historic Robben Island, Table Mountain, the National Botanical Gardens at Kirstenbosch, or a tour of South Africa's centuries-old wine estates, with their beautiful Cape Dutch architecture.
Adjoining famed Kruger National Park, Thornybush Private Game Reserve is an unfenced area of over 40 square miles of pristine African bush. Explore by 4WD with your tracker-guide in the wooded savannas, where you can expect to see lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and other wildlife, and the birdwatching is amazing. Because you are on private land, not in a national park, enjoy off-road safaris and night drives. Overnights are at Thorybush Game Lodge, with its waterhole favored by elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife, or Shumbalala Game Lodge on the banks of the Monwana river. In the evenings, enjoy dinner in the open under the African sky.
Timbavati, Londolozi, and Mala Mala private game reserves are among South Africa's great tracts of untamed gamelands adjacent to world-famous Kruger National Park. The Big Five roam freely here, and on early morning and late afternoon game drives, you can see colorful birds, graceful antelope, giraffe, comical warthogs, zebras, and sightings of leopard, rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, blue wildebeest, the elusive wild dog. Overnights at Kambaku Safari Lodge, offering lovely thatched suites with private verandas, or upgrade to Varty Camp in Londolozi or Mala Mala Main Camp in Mala Mala Game Reserve. Depart via Johannesburg on Day 10.

      Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

      Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

      Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

      Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

      Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

The minimum participation is two persons. Dinners on your own and overnights at hotel.

Full-Day Cape Peninsula / Table Mountain*: Enjoy a morning of exploring the spectacular Cape Peninsula, the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, and Cape Point itself, where the Cape Point lighthouse stands on top of sea cliffs at the very tip of the African continent. Visit the Boulders Penguin Colony, home to a growing colony of rare African penguins. After lunch, take the cable car (weather permitting) up world-famous Table Mountain for incredible views of the city and Table Bay. This mountain is one of the most spectacular urban geographic features in the world and also an incredible environment for hundreds of species of endemic flora. Descent is also by cable car. *Note that the order of this program may be reversed. A visit to the National Botanical Gardens at Kirstenbosch, where 10,000 species are cultivated on 1,000 acres, can be substituted for Table Mountain.

Full-Day Shark Dive: Enjoy a day in famed Shark Alley for the thrill of a “cage dive” to view magnificent Great White sharks from underwater (no dive experience necessary). You begin with an early morning start and a two-hour drive to Gansbaai, where you have breakfast and an orientation on arrival. A 30-minute boat ride then takes you to Shark Alley, a shallow channel that is the world's best place to see Great White sharks. The skipper anchors the boat and baits the sharks, and you have the opportunity to view from the deck or to enter a special diving cage just below the surface. A light lunch is included, served on board. The boat returns to the dock by mid-afternoon. (Note: Shark sightings have recently become more difficult due to the presence of orcas in the area, which hunt the sharks.)

Full-Day Table Mountain and Winelands Visit: En route to the wine country, take the cable car up spectacular Table Mountain (weather permitting). Descent is also by cable car. Afterwards, head out of the city to spend the rest of the day touring South Africa's centuries-old wine estates, with their beautiful Cape Dutch architecture. Visit the historic town of Stellenbosch, the oldest town in South Africa, and the Franschhoek Valley, birthplace of South Africa's wine culture, begun by the French Huguenots who founded Franschhoek in 1688. Also visit the Paarl Valley, where the Afrikaans language came from, and enjoy two wine tastings. Lunch is in the lovely town of Franschhoek. Kirstenbosch Gardens can be substituted for Table Mountain.

Full-Day Langa Cultural Visit / Robben Island: One of the most popular explorations for visitors is a tour of Langa, one of Cape Town's township outside of Cape Town. This visit offers the chance to meet and speak to some of the local people, visit their houses and shops, and learn about this community's projects, craft centers, and entrepreneurial energy. After lunch, take a boat ride out to historic Robben Island, six miles offshore in Table Bay, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years. The island's former role as a maximum security political prison made it notorious, but it has now has been developed as a nature reserve, museum, and poignant memorial to South Africa's long liberation struggle. Some of the guides are former political prisoners.

Full-Day Langa Township / Table Mountain Visit: Tour of Langa, one of Cape Town's nearby townships (as described above). After lunch, take the cable car (weather permitting) up world-famous Table Mountain for incredible views of the city and Table Bay. Descent is also by cable car. Kirstenbosch Gardens can be substituted for Table Mountain.

Please note that the Langa Township tour is not available during school holidays (call for dates); the city tour can be substituted. The Table Mountain tour is weather dependent and may not be available in the event of inclement weather. Also note it is closed every summer for two weeks at the end of July for maintenance; Kirstenbosch Garden can be substituted when Table Mountain is not available.

Note: Our optional 3-day Cape Winelands Extension begins on Day 4. This provides an ideal viewing opportunity, as the leopards permit safari vehicles to follow them through the bush even while hunting. Superb photographic opportunities frequently present themselves as leopards feed or lounge in trees, move alongside open safari vehicles, or stretch their limbs on termite mounds. You can request a new passport through US Passport Services Office (the service of adding pages for visas was discontinued as of January 1, 2016) or use a visa service agency, which can take care of your passport renewal and expedite the process, if needed. We recommend Passport Visas Express. Be sure to allow sufficient time to acquire this before your trip.

It is a good idea to carry photocopies of your passport's photo page and any acquired visa pages for your trip (if applicable) in case your passport is lost or as an additional piece of identification, as well as two extra passport photos.

Traveling to/through South Africa with children under the age of 18:
In addition to a valid passport, it is recommended that children under the age of 18 travel with an unabridged birth certificate. If they are not traveling with both of their parents, a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) is also required. You will also need the PDF copy of the passport page of the non-traveling parent to verify the signature of the consent form. Even though it is possible that a copy of the birth certificate would suffice in some countries, the authorities worldwide have become stricter about this requirement so we recommend you bring an original birth certificate. If you have questions about entry requirement details for child travelers, please contact the relevant embassy or consulate. Immigration officials may not request to see this paperwork, but best to be prepared just in case.
US citizens (US passport holders) visiting the Republic of South Africa for 90 days or less for tourism purposes do not need visas. Keep your exchange receipts so you can reconvert any rands into dollars at the end of your stay. Also, keep the receipts for anything you purchase. Upon exit from the country, you can reclaim the VAT (value added tax) for those purchases if you present the receipts and items purchased. When budgeting spending money, remember that inflation has been running high in South Africa. There are ATMs for debit card/credit card cash withdrawals in all of the towns, and extras at the lodges can be paid for by credit card (traveler's checks are not accepted). To use an ATM internationally, you must have a four-digit PIN. There are no airport departure taxes.

You will need to budget spending money for gratuities, for meals not included in the trip itinerary, and for personal items such as snacks, phone calls, etc.

If you plan to use your credit cards abroad, inform your credit card company before your departure that you will be using the card outside the US.
Tipping is completely discretionary, but customary. To reserve your Private Journey, we will need to know your preferred dates of travel. We will then check availability and send you a proposed itinerary with exact pricing for your adventure. We can typically hold a provisional booking for one week. At that time, we must collect your initial deposit or accommodations will be released. We accept Visa, Mastercard, or American Express card. Upon receipt of your deposit, we will send you a Welcome Packet that includes a letter of confirmation, Detailed Itinerary, Trip Application, Medical Form, and Pre-Departure Information Booklet with information to help you prepare for your adventure. Please see our Cancellations and Transfer Fee Schedule for specific payment information.

Wilderness Travel Trip Leaders have a passion and a joy for creating an unforgettable journey.
