After a visit to Colombo’s markets and mix of Hindu and Buddhist temples, we head to our lovely resort hotel overlooking the rock fortress of Sigiriya. Here we’ll look for wild elephants in Kaudulla National Park, then visit the garden pavilions of Anuradhapura, the graceful pagodas of 10th century Polonnaruwa (Sri Lanka’s lovely medieval capital), and King Kashyapa’s citadel of Sigiriya, a towering rock outcrop rising from the jungle plains. All three places are World Heritage Sites. Near Ritigala, we visit a local school, then head to a Buddhist monastery to participate in an almsgiving ceremony.
We climb up to the cave-temple complex at Dambulla, then head to Kandy, home to the famous 16th century Temple of the Tooth. Kandy is also the center of the island’s handicraft industry, which includes exquisite silver and gold jewelry. In colonial Nuwara Eliya in the heart of hill country, we walk through tea plantations and learn the fine art of “tasting” tea. A short rail journey brings us to the peaceful town of Ella, where we can enjoy a village bike ride and a lesson in preparing Sri Lankan cuisine.
In Yala, we look for fabulous birdlife, troops of monkeys chattering in the trees, and herds of wild elephant. After walking the ramparts of the historic seaside trading post of Galle, founded as a Dutch fort, we depart on Day 13 via Colombo.

The Master is also renowned across the island for his healing skills and predicting the future.

Returning to our resort, we watch a cooking demonstration, then enjoy a savory traditional Sri Lankan feast cooked in clay pots and served on banana leaves. In the afternoon, a short drive brings us to Sigiriya, the famed rock fortress of King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). As we approach the site by road, we can see in the distance a towering rock outcrop rising from the green jungle plains. It was atop this enormous rock that King Kashyapa constructed his elaborate palace in the 5th century AD. We follow steep stone steps to the top, a flat, three-acre summit plateau with the ruins of pavilions, a palace, pleasure gardens, and uninterrupted views of lush green jungle in every direction. Sigiriya (“lion's throat”) was so named because visitors had to pass through the carved throat of a lion to get to the top. The earliest capital of Sri Lanka, “the city of Anura” was home to the royal court from 437 BC to 1017 AD. Here we find the island's oldest Buddhist shrines, some dating back to the 3rd century BC, impressive white dagobas, along with gardens, beautifully executed stone baths and ponds, and a superb irrigation system of reservoirs and canals. Dagobas are elaborate relic chambers of brick and earth topped by a golden spire (the word “pagoda” is derived from the word dagoba). One dagoba here, the Thuparama, is considered to be the oldest in Sri Lanka and is believed to enshrine the collar bone relic of the Buddha. The 3rd century Isurumuniya Temple at Anuradhapura is noted for its elaborate rock carvings. At the heart of this huge and evocative ruin is a 2,000-year-old bodhi tree—the Sri Maha Bodhi. It was grown from a cutting of the tree in Kushinagar, India, under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and was brought here by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns and the daughter of the great Indian Emperor Ashoka. Buddhist pilgrims are often seen circumambulating the tree in devotional practices.

In the afternoon, we head to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's lovely medieval capital, with its well-preserved ancient dagobas, moonstones (features of Sinhalese architecture of ancient Sri Lanka), parks, and stunning carved statues. This compact ancient ruin, a World Heritage Site, dates from the late 10th century, when the Chola kings of southern India invaded Sri Lanka and conquered Anuradhapura. The invaders then moved their capital to Polonnaruwa for strategic reasons, but were ultimately forced out by the Sinhalese ruler Vijayabahu I. The Sea of Parakrama, a vast 12th century man-made reservoir created by King Parakramabahu I (1153-86) during Polonnaruwa's golden age, dominates the site, and small troops of monkeys patrol the wooded areas. When the king finally regained his throne in 89 BC, he ordered the caves painted with magnificent images, some depicting scenes from the Buddha's life and Sinhalese history. There is also a colossal figure of the recumbent Buddha carved out of the living rock, some 45 feet long. As we head to Kandy, we explore the Aluwihare Heritage Centre in Matale, a crafts workshop once run by the late Ena de Silva, a renowned batik artist, social activist, and prominent Sri Lankan (her father was the first Inspector General of Police of post-independence Ceylon). After lunch, we continue to Kandy, the hill capital and last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings, nestled in the splendor of hill country at 1,600 feet with a tranquil lake in its midst. We'll also visit the onsite Buddhist Museum, with its photographs and displays portraying the facets of Buddhism around the world. Afterwards, we visit a cultural center where an ancient house of a village chief has been converted into an art center whose vast collections of furniture, art items, antique books, manuscripts, photographs, and postcards reflect the interests of its founder, Jacques Soulié, a French national who now calls Sri Lanka home. Tea was introduced to the island after 1868 when a blight destroyed most of the coffee plants and estate owners had to diversify. A Scotsman, James Taylor, with knowledge of tea cultivation in northern India, was in charge of the first sowing of tea seeds on 19 acres, and some of those bushes are still producing today. By 1873, Taylor's first Ceylon-grown teas sold for a very good price in London. Rapid expansion of Ceylon's tea industry in the 1870s and 1880s brought interest from the large British tea companies, which took over many of the small estates. In 1890, four estates were purchased by an Irish immigrant to America, Thomas Lipton, who had made a fortune in the grocery business. Tea was expensive for the working class at that time, and Lipton introduced the concept of inexpensive tea leaves in a teapot-ready bag.

A morning hike brings us through tea plantations, where we witness the local life of the tea picking community. At a tea factory, we'll see how the raw green leaf is converted to the familiar dark brown product through a process of drying, cutting, rolling, and fermentation. We'll also learn to “taste” tea and try to identify the subtle differences in flavor. After our visit, we head to the train station to board the train that carries us to Ella, with a box lunch aboard the train en route. For example, respect for one's elders and hospitality are widespread cultural attributes. Here are some things to be aware of:

Respect
Great respect is given to Buddha images and Buddhist monks. Women must not touch a monk under any circumstances. If a woman has to give something to a monk, she must first present it to a man, who then presents it. All Buddha images, large or small, ruined or not, are regarded as sacred objects. It is not appropriate to climb up on one to take a photograph, or to do anything that might show a lack of respect. When sitting in front of a Buddha image, monk, or anyone of higher status, your legs should be tucked under your body away from the person. (Sitting cross-legged suggests equality and is perfectly acceptable among friends, but not in the presence of “superior beings!”). When in doubt, the best guide is to watch the local people and do what they do.

Losing Face
As elsewhere in Asia, it is considered unseemly to show too much emotion, such as displaying anger. It is best to just relax through any conflicts or irritations. In particular, avoid doing anything to cause public humiliation to anyone. This extends to criticism of lousy service, engaging in public arguments, and "demanding to see the boss." The people of these countries have an extreme reluctance to hurt others' feelings and thus lose face.

Gifts
Many of the people we visit are living under hardship and our natural instinct would be to give them gifts. Because the unwary distribution of pens, money, candy, and so on has led to beggar mentality in many places in the world, we suggest you do not give anything to soliciting children. Along our journey we may visit some schools. Gifts of pens and school supplies to the head teacher would be gratefully accepted. Your Trip Leader will organize this for the group if appropriate. Bubbles, stickers, tennis balls and 'educational' toys go over very well with local village kids.

Other Do's and Don'ts
In Buddhist countries, the head is the most spiritual and exalted part of the body. Thus, it is not appropriate to touch anyone on the head, except for small children. (Touching the head of a small child demonstrates your protection of that child.) The feet, considered the lowest and dirtiest part of the body (especially in the villages!) should never be pointed at someone or a Buddha image. Bowing your head and body slightly when walking through someone's “space” is considered a polite and necessary thing to do. Public demonstrations of affection between men and women are frowned on. Your efforts to emulate the local behavior while in these countries will be much appreciated.

As in all travel situations, it is important to observe the local people carefully and use common sense. For example, ask permission before taking a photo, entering a temple, washing at a tap, or touching a baby. When seated, it is not polite to show the bottoms of the feet, and it is especially rude to point them in someone else's direction. Therefore you should not stretch your legs out or cross them with the sole turned up or out. Also, never step over or on any part of a person as this exposes them to the bottom of your feet. The purity of the body is viewed as being the highest at the head, becoming progressively dirtier down to the feet. This also makes patting children or other people on the head ill-mannered. Touching a person of the opposite sex, even on the shoulder or hand, can easily be misinterpreted and it's best to refrain from doing so.

Clothing
Be modest in the way you dress while visiting Sri Lanka. Women should wear skirts falling at least to the knee, or pants. Bathing suits, halter tops, and tank tops are considered an unseemly display and will embarrass local people. Especially in and around temples, wear long pants or a skirt, and a top that covers the shoulders and upper arms. Men may wear shorts up to mid-thigh, but no shorter. It is permitted for men to rest and sunbathe without a shirt, but it is considered extremely rude for men to walk about bare-chested. Please note: In Sri Lanka, it is required to wear a white shirt and pants or a long skirt when visiting temples.

Shrines
Regardless of their size, shrines and temples are revered with great devotion. When entering a temple, ask about or observe local practice. In some temples, shoes must be removed. In some it is forbidden to wear leather of any kind (such as a leather belt) or to eat.

Air tickets (or E-tickets)

Passport

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Sri Lanka Visa

One other picture ID, such as a driver's license

Expense money

Duffel bag or soft-sided roller bag, with small padlock (must be unlocked for air travel)

Daypack, large enough for a sweater, water bottle, camera, and other items you want with you during the day

Small roll-up duffel to carry home purchases (keep in mind that you may have to pay excess baggage charges)

We recommend that you bring comfortable, lightweight clothing and shoes made for walking. As of March 2024, we no longer require guests who exhibit cold or flu symptoms to test for COVID-19. Guests who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to follow local health protocols, wear a mask in group vehicles and during indoor activities for the remainder of the trip, and may be asked to dine separately. Any travel companion sharing a room with them will also be required to wear a mask at all times in the shared group vehicles for the remainder of the trip.

We encourage all travelers to actively monitor their own well-being and to use common-sense preventative measures such as regular handwashing (or use of hand sanitizer) and/or wearing a face mask. Guests may be required to wear a mask if the Trip Leader believes the situation warrants it.

Leading up to the trip, we encourage you to do everything possible to stay healthy, including avoiding close contact with anyone displaying cold or flu symptoms and washing your hands often. As always, by traveling with Wilderness Travel, guests agree to be accountable for their own well-being. If you are worried about a fellow traveler's cold or flu-like symptoms, you may opt to wear a mask or distance yourself as needed. It's important to remember that there are inherent risks associated with travel and group settings.

These protocols will be reviewed and adjusted as guidance evolves.

Camera Recommendations
With the many advances in digital technology, a simple compact digital camera or even your smartphone is capable of taking pictures suitable for the needs of most people. For higher quality images and the ability to use long lenses for closer wildlife pictures, a DSLR camera is well worthwhile, though heavier. Most digital cameras and phones have good video options, but you may want to consider a GoPro for a lightweight, waterproof option. Always practice ahead of time with new equipment and bring your manual with you. You may want to consider renting camera equipment for your trip from places such as lensrentals.com. This is an especially good idea for renting large zoom lenses that you may need for just one trip. Adding their extra insurance fee to cover expensive equipment is recommended.

Camera Accessories
We recommend bringing at least two large capacity memory cards or a small digital storage unit (or tablet) to back up your photos, freeing space on your memory cards. Don't forget to bring a battery charger and a backup battery so one is always charged and ready to use. For trips where you may be away from power sources for multiple days, consider looking into a solar-powered battery charger or buying additional backup batteries, and check that you have the appropriate adapter for the electrical outlets in your destination.

Sharing Your Images
We would love for you to share photos from your trip, and with your permission, may even use your photos in our marketing materials or on our photo blog. We request that you send us a small sample of your best images. Please email your photos to wtphotoblog@gmail.com or tag us @WildernessTravel on social media.

Photography Etiquette
When taking pictures of local people, be aware of cultural considerations. Approaching people with a warm smile and using polite gestures or simple phrases to ask permission to photograph them usually works well. It is always recommended to engage people in conversation before asking to photograph them, but if people do not wish to have their photo taken, please honor their requests. We urge travelers to avoid giving money in exchange for photo opportunities, which makes it harder for future travelers to have a meaningful personal interaction with local people. Please always heed your Trip Leader's guidelines for what is appropriate.
